Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Entry 7: Meeting Impa

The next morning, I approached the guards stationed at what I assumed was Impa’s home. I moved cautiously, unsure how they’d react, but as soon as they spotted my Sheikah Slate, their demeanor shifted. They quickly apologized and stepped aside, allowing me to pass without question. As I climbed the steps, I was met by a nervous young woman named Paya, who introduced herself as Impa’s granddaughter. Her wide-eyed expression shifted from awe to anxiousness when she saw the slate. She stammered that I must be the hero of legend her grandmother had spoken of.

Inside the house, Impa greeted me with a knowing look, her first words striking me like an echo from another life: “So, you’re finally awake.” She called me by name, her voice soft yet firm, but when she noticed the confusion in my eyes, her expression softened. It was clear—I didn’t recognize her. She quickly deduced that I must have lost my memory, her surprise tinged with a hint of sadness.

Impa recounted the events surrounding the Calamity, stories that King Rhoam had briefly touched upon, but her words painted a deeper picture. She revealed that Princess Zelda had left her a message for me—one she would only share if I was willing to risk my life to hear it. Considering I’d already been risking my life for far less—raiding monster camps for treasure to sell—I didn’t hesitate. I assured her I was ready.

Impa’s eyes glimmered with pride, though she seemed unsurprised by my courage, even in the absence of my memories. The message was simple yet heavy with purpose: “Free the Divine Beasts.”

After delivering Zelda’s message, Impa pointed out that my Sheikah Slate was incomplete. She urged me to visit the Hateno Tech Lab to have it repaired, believing it would aid me in the trials to come. With that, I left her home, my mind racing.

How could so many people know me when I didn’t even know myself? The villagers’ familiarity with me, the legends they spoke of—I was a stranger to my own story. These thoughts tangled in my mind as I rode Samwise back to Hateno, questions piling up with no answers in sight.

Then, something strange happened. Along the road, I stopped to speak with an unfamiliar traveler. Without warning, he dropped his disguise, revealing himself as a member of the Yiga Clan, sworn to Master Kohga. His mission? To kill the legendary warrior—me.

He lunged without hesitation, but my reflexes kicked in. Two quick arrows were all it took to defeat him, but the encounter left me rattled. Was I being hunted now? Had revealing myself to the Sheikah painted a target on my back?

The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the road. All I wanted now was to reach the comfort of my house and my own bed.
