God of War (2018) - Entry 22: Ivaldi’s Workshop
We will enhance our weapons and armor. We will close the realm tears that threaten the stability of the realms. We will destroy Odin’s ravens, his spies, and we will seek out and free the remaining Valkyries to restore balance.
The road ahead is uncertain. But we walk it together. Father and son.
I decide that our first destination will be Niflheim, a realm known for its rare resources and materials, ones the dwarves can use to enhance our weapons and armor. As we exit the realm travel room and step into the new realm, a foul, acrid stench immediately overwhelms our senses. The air feels wrong. It is thick, heavy, and hostile.
At the far end of Tyr's bridge, we find that Sindri has already set up a small workshop. He greets us, welcoming us to Niflheim, though his usual levity is dimmed by the dangers of this place.
He explains that Niflheim is a realm shrouded in a cursed mist, an endless, magical fog that is not only toxic, but will kill all who remain exposed to it. The air itself is lethal. Few dare enter, even among the gods.
At the heart of the realm lies Ivaldi’s Workshop, once the pride of dwarven craftsmanship. Ivaldi and his sons, legendary smiths, forged relics of immense power by finding ways to harness the frost and mist powers of the realm. Their works marveled both men and gods alike. Unfortunately, Odin saw Ivaldi's creations as a threat to his power and exiled them for refusing to serve his will. In defiance, Ivaldi sealed his workshop behind a magical labyrinth, filled with traps and illusions to guard his secrets from Odin, or anyone else who would try to take them. In his fury and retaliation, Ivaldi also meddled with forces he shouldn't have that cursed the mist and turned it into the poisonous fog that now resides here.
Now, the cursed mist has entirely consumed the workshop and monsters have taken hold of the whole area. But Sindri has a proposition: if we gather the raw materials and enchantments scattered within the labyrinth, resources far too dangerous for him to retrieve, he will use them to forge new armor and weapon upgrades. Not only would they be a significant improvement to what we carry, but they would also provide some protection against the deadly mist.
Atreus and I exchange a glance. We've braved worse. And we’ll need every advantage we can get for what’s coming.
With our resolve set, we ventured into the poison-laced labyrinth of Niflheim. Even with my godly endurance, I could feel the toll of the cursed mist. It clawed at my lungs and sapped my strength. At first, our forays were short. We had to retreat quickly before the mist overwhelmed us.
But with each haul of materials we brought back, Sindri kept his end of the bargain. Piece by piece, he crafted us armor and gear imbued with protective enchantments. The improvements allowed us to venture deeper and remain longer. Atreus, too, grew stronger, more precise with his arrows, more tactical in battle. Every step within the labyrinth was both a test and a lesson.
Eventually, Sindri provided us with an entry stone, an enchanted keystone that allowed us access to the heart of Ivaldi’s workshop. The central chamber glimmered with treasure, but it was locked behind even greater trials. Ivaldi had prepared well for those who might come after him. To fully unlock his legacy, we needed to recover hidden keys and rare materials scattered throughout the twisting halls of the labyrinth.
So we pressed on. Day after day, we delved deeper. We dodged traps, fought monsters that fed on the mist, and gathered what we needed. Slowly, the chests in the workshop began to yield to us, one by one. Each reward we uncovered enhanced our weapons, sharpening the Leviathan Axe’s edge, empowering the Blades of Chaos, strengthening Atreus’s bow.
At last, we had everything needed to unlock the final reward: the realm tears Ivaldi had sealed long ago. Sindri believed they guarded the most powerful treasures in his collection, along with the fiercest trials.
He was right.
One by one, we opened the tears. From each emerged deadly enemies: vicious revenants, relentless ogres, and even a soul eater that threatened to turn the tide of battle. But with all we had gained, our skills, our armor, and our unity, we prevailed.
By the end, the rewards were beyond worth: rare enchantments, runes of immense power, and raw materials that would allow us to further elevate our strength for the trials still to come.
Niflheim had tested us more than I anticipated. But it had also helped prepared us for the gods that would soon come for us.
With our trials in Niflheim behind us, we returned once more to Midgard. The change was immediate, colder and heavier. The air itself seemed to carry weight. Snow continued to fall, and the winds whispered of the coming storm. If this was indeed the beginning of Fimbulwinter, we had no time to waste.
We took it upon ourselves to secure Midgard as best we could. First, we sought out the remaining realm tears, dangerous rifts between worlds, and sealed them. Each one fought back, releasing beasts and spirits that refused to go quietly. But Atreus and I had grown stronger, sharper. Each battle, though punishing, further prepared us for the war on the horizon.
As we continued our work, we lit each of the realm tower braziers surrounding the Lake of Nine. Their flames pierced through the falling snow, a symbol of resistance against the long winter. But there was more to them than just fire. Each brazier bore a name that matched those of the Valkyries. A pattern began to form. These were more than memorials. They were clues.
Three remained unaccounted for, their prisons hidden in the far corners of the realms. From what we could decipher, and with Mimir’s insight, we determined that one Valkyrie was trapped in Niflheim, another in Muspelheim, and the last in Helheim. We would find them. And free them.
We returned to the dwarves with this knowledge. Brock and Sindri, always listening, offered more than just insight. They told us that further enhancements to our armor and weapons were possible but the rare materials needed lay in Muspelheim, the realm of fire and endless combat trials.
So we made ready.
Muspelheim would be our next destination: a place of flame and fury, where strength alone determined survival. There, we would gather the materials we needed, face whatever trials awaited us, and free the Valkyrie.
